Luxury and expensive aren't necessarily the same thing.
You can spend a huge amount of money on a holiday and still come away feeling that something was missing. Equally, some of the most luxurious experiences I've arranged have had very little to do with the price tag and everything to do with how thoughtfully the experience was created around the person travelling.
After years working at the high end of travel, I've become increasingly interested in the difference between the two.
Because when you've travelled enough, you start to notice what makes something genuinely luxurious.
It's rarely the thing that's shouting the loudest.
So, what actually makes travel luxurious?
Luxury travel is often presented as a list of things: five-star hotels, private villas, first-class flights, Michelin-starred restaurants and beautiful surroundings.
Of course, those things can be part of a wonderful trip. But they're not what makes the experience luxurious in themselves.
For me, genuine luxury comes down to how you feel throughout the journey. It's the sense that someone has anticipated what you need, that the people looking after you know what they're doing and that you don't have to carry the mental load of making everything work.
Here are five things I look for.

1. Luxury anticipates rather than reacts
One of the clearest signs of genuine luxury is that someone has thought about what you need before you've had to ask.
Your dietary requirements are already known. The cot is in the room when you arrive. Your driver knows where you're going and the best way to get there. The hotel knows you're celebrating something special.
None of these things are particularly glamorous on their own. But together, they create a feeling that someone has been paying attention.
That's very different from arriving somewhere expensive and having to explain everything from scratch.
Real luxury should feel considered before it ever needs to become visible.

2. The people looking after you know how to make things happen
There's a huge difference between being given a luxury service and being looked after by people who genuinely know how to look after you.
You can feel it in the way someone responds when something doesn't go according to plan.
Are they reading from a script and waiting for somebody else to make the decision? Or do they have the knowledge, relationships and authority to simply sort it out?
At the highest level of travel, things will occasionally go wrong. Flights get delayed. Weather changes. Plans need to move.
The luxury isn't necessarily in preventing every problem. It's in knowing that when something happens, somebody capable is already dealing with it.
That's one of the reasons relationships matter so much in luxury travel.

3. Space is part of the luxury
We often talk about luxury in terms of what is there: the size of the room, the quality of the furnishings, the view, the facilities.
But some of the most valuable things in luxury travel are what aren't there.
No rushing.
No crowds.
No feeling that you're constantly being moved from one thing to another.
Space to breathe. Space to think. Space to have a long lunch without watching the clock.
A beautiful room certainly matters, but so does having somewhere you can genuinely switch off. Sometimes the most luxurious part of a trip is simply having enough room to feel like you've time again.

4. The best details are the ones you barely notice
The most impressive details of a luxury trip aren't necessarily the ones you'll photograph.
They're the things that simply make everything feel easier.
The lighting that's right when you come back to your room late at night. A driver who knows the quieter route. A favourite drink appearing without you having to ask. A restaurant that already knows about an allergy.
When everything works beautifully, you might not even notice the amount of thought behind it.
That's the point.
The planning is happening in the background so that you can be present in the experience itself.
5. True luxury is built around you, not what you spend
Perhaps the most important distinction is this: luxury should feel personal.
It's not simply about having a bigger budget or staying in the most expensive property available.
The right experience should be built around who you're, what you enjoy and what matters to you.
A solo traveller should feel just as considered as a couple celebrating their honeymoon. A family should be able to have an extraordinary experience without having to compromise everything for the youngest member of the group.
The moment you start feeling like a transaction, something has been lost.

Luxury is the feeling of being held
This is ultimately how I think about luxury travel.
It's not just the hotel.
It's not the price of the room.
It's not the wine list or the thread count.
It's the feeling that somebody has thought about the details and that you're in safe, experienced hands.
At Travl.Love, that's what we mean when we talk about luxury being feeling held.
We bring together years of experience, relationships across the luxury travel industry and a global network of people we trust to create journeys that feel effortless for the people travelling.
You shouldn't have to know who to call when you have an unusual request. You shouldn't have to spend your holiday managing the logistics. And you shouldn't have to compromise on the experience simply because what you want is a little more complicated to arrange.
That's where expertise becomes part of the luxury.
Because sometimes the most luxurious thing you can buy isn't something you can see at all.
It's knowing that everything has been taken care of.
