Nadine has spent years travelling, staying and asking questions, so you don't have to.
When you're spending a significant amount of money on a holiday, it makes sense to want someone who knows what they're doing.
But how do you choose a luxury travel advisor?
There are plenty of companies offering luxury holidays, and on the surface, many of them can look very similar. They have beautiful websites, beautiful hotels and beautiful photographs. They can all tell you that their service is personal and that they have access to the best experiences.
But luxury travel is about much more than being able to book a beautiful hotel.
The real value of a good travel advisor often becomes apparent in the things you don't see: the questions they ask, the relationships they have, the details they notice and what happens when something doesn't go according to plan.
After more than 20 years working in luxury travel, these are seven things I'd look for when choosing a travel advisor.
1. They listen before they recommend
A good luxury travel advisor shouldn't start by sending you a list of hotels.
They should start by understanding you.
Who are you travelling with? What do you enjoy? What have you loved about previous trips? What didn't work? How do you want to spend your time? Do you want to be looked after from beginning to end, or do you prefer to have plenty of independence?
And perhaps most importantly, what do you actually want from the trip?
You might say you want a beach holiday, but what you really need is somewhere peaceful where you can properly switch off. You might think you want a particular hotel because you've seen it on Instagram, but an experienced advisor might know that another property would suit you much better.
The best advice doesn't start with a booking system.
It starts with listening.
2. They have genuine relationships within the industry
One of the biggest differences between a luxury travel advisor and simply booking your own holiday online is what happens behind the booking.
Anyone can search for a hotel.
The question is what happens when you need something more specific.
Over the years, good travel advisors build relationships with hotels, DMCs, guides, suppliers and other travel specialists around the world. Those relationships can make a real difference to the experience you receive.
It might mean knowing which room to request, who to speak to at a particular property, where a special occasion can be made genuinely memorable or who to call when you need something that isn't part of the standard offering.
These relationships take years to build.
They're one of the reasons an experienced luxury travel advisor can sometimes find a solution where an online search simply can't.
3. They understand that expensive doesn't always mean right
Luxury travel isn't about finding the most expensive option available.
In fact, one of the most useful things a good travel advisor can do is tell you when you don't need to spend more.
The biggest suite isn't necessarily the best suite for you.
The most expensive hotel in a destination isn't necessarily the one you'll enjoy most.
And an itinerary packed with private experiences isn't necessarily more luxurious than one that gives you time and space to enjoy where you're.
An experienced advisor should understand what will actually make a difference to your experience and where your money is best spent.
Sometimes that's an extraordinary room.
Sometimes it's a private guide.
Sometimes it's a better location.
Sometimes it's simply choosing the right property in the first place.

4. They can solve the unusual requests
This is where a travel advisor's network really comes into its own.
Luxury clients often have very specific requirements.
Perhaps you're travelling with a complicated family set-up. Maybe you're celebrating something important. Perhaps you want an experience that isn't available as a standard excursion, or you're looking for somewhere incredibly private.
Sometimes the request is so specific that there isn't an obvious answer.
That's when you want somebody with a good black book.
Someone who can pick up the phone and ask.
Someone who has been to the destination.
Someone who knows another travel advisor who has done something similar.
Someone who can keep looking when the first answer is no.
That kind of problem-solving ability isn't something you can simply add to a website.
It comes from years of experience and relationships.
5. They understand the logistics behind luxury
Luxury travel should feel effortless.
That doesn't mean there isn't an enormous amount happening behind the scenes.
Flights need to connect.
Transfers need to arrive at the right time.
Rooms need to be configured correctly.
Private guides need to know where to meet you.
Restaurants need to understand dietary requirements.
Activities need to work around the ages and abilities of the people travelling.
And sometimes plans need to change.
A good travel advisor thinks about those details before they become your problem.
That's an important part of the value of using an advisor. You're not simply paying someone to make a reservation. You're paying for experience, oversight and the knowledge that somebody else is keeping an eye on the moving parts.
You get to enjoy the holiday rather than manage it.
6. They're prepared to challenge you
This might sound counterintuitive, but I don't think a great travel advisor should simply give you whatever you've asked for.
Sometimes the best service is saying: "I don't think that's actually the right option for you."
Perhaps you've chosen a destination because everyone seems to be going there, but it doesn't fit what you're looking for.
Perhaps you've picked a hotel that looks beautiful online but isn't right for the way you travel.
Perhaps you've tried to fit too much into the itinerary.
An advisor with genuine expertise should be confident enough to challenge the brief when they believe there's a better answer.
You're not looking for someone who simply books what you tell them.
You're looking for someone who understands why you're asking for it in the first place.
7. They look after you beyond the booking
The relationship shouldn't end when you receive your itinerary.
Things can happen before and during a trip that nobody could have predicted.
Flights change. Weather disrupts plans. A family member becomes unwell. You decide you want to change something while you're away.
Knowing there's somebody you can contact can make an enormous difference.
This is another part of what luxury means to us at Travl.Love.
It's the feeling of being held.
Knowing that someone has thought about the details, that someone knows your trip and that you're not suddenly on your own if something changes.
The best travel advisors remain involved before, during and after your trip because the experience doesn't begin when you arrive at the airport.

So, is using a luxury travel advisor worth it?
If you're simply looking for the cheapest flight and a hotel for a weekend away, probably not.
But if you're planning an important trip, spending a significant amount of money or looking for something highly personal, the value can be considerable.
A good advisor can save you time, but that's only part of it.
They can help you avoid the wrong hotel.
They can use relationships you don't have.
They can make difficult things possible.
They can spot problems before they happen.
And they can take away the mental load that comes with organising a complicated trip.
That's particularly valuable when the holiday itself is supposed to be a break.
The best travel advisor isn't necessarily the one with the biggest list of hotels
There's a temptation to judge a luxury travel advisor by the number of destinations they cover or the number of hotels they can book.
I'd look at something else.
Can they listen to what you actually want?
Do they have relationships that go beyond a booking platform?
Do they know the destinations they recommend?
Can they solve a problem when the obvious answer doesn't work?
Will they tell you when they think there's a better option?
And, perhaps most importantly, do you feel that they genuinely care about getting it right?
Because the real luxury isn't having someone book you an expensive holiday.
It's having someone who knows enough to make the expensive holiday worth it.
